Put Those Sweaters Back On Although I was a child then, I remember President Jimmy Carter was unpopular. In the winter of 1977, he gave a televised fireside chat wearing a sweater, and told Americans struggling with high energy prices to turn down their thermostats to 65 in the daytime and 55 degrees at night. Americans were standing in line for hours waiting for gasoline they could barely afford.
