The Changing Face of Competition
Bank Director’s 30th annual Acquire or Be Acquired Conference launched with a robust discussion of the changing competitive landscape that banks face today. Financial institutions have long competed with nonbank organizations for lending business; in fact, a majority of residential lending is no longer done by banks, according to Tom Michaud, president and CEO of Keefe Bruyette and Woods, a Stifel company. But Naomi Snyder, Bank Director’s editor-in-chief, shares that the industry increasingly faces outside competition for deposits as well, from fintechs like SoFi Technologies and even unlikely contenders like Starbucks, which carries roughly $1.7 billion stored on rewards cards.
