Like most big American cities, Pittsburgh has a large number of homeless men and women. The problem is especially acute in the city’s downtown district — a wedge of land bordered by the converging Allegheny and Monongahela rivers and referred to locally as the Golden Triangle. A rise in criminal activity, which some people attributed to the rise in homelessness and drug abuse, had many downtown businesses concerned.
