The qualities that each individual director brings to the process of board governance has a tremendous impact on its effectiveness. Banking is the very definition of a numbers-driven business, and it is through the numbers that directors will monitor the performance of their institution. During this session, we will review the key financial metrics relating to capitalization, credit quality, liquidity and profitability that directors need to understand. Examples include the Tier 1 capital ratio, the nonperforming asset ratio, return on equity and the efficiency ratio.

Principles of Sound Banking

Banking is a highly leveraged business, even at the higher capitalization levels that have been in effect since the financial crisis, and the margin for error is small. We will review some of the principles of sound banking including ample capitalization, a stable deposit base, a strong credit culture and a rigorous risk management program. We will also review some of the most common missteps that have historically led to bank failures.
